Do you ever set your table and think it needs something extra  – well these sweet fabric napkin rings are it. The pop of colour will just make you smile.  So why not make a set in time for your next dinner party.  They’re so easy.  Set aside an hour and you’ll be delighted with your creation.  Then it’s just 24 hours drying time and they’re finished.

Because they’re a dinner party thing, they’d also make the most gorgeous hostess gift. Have a think about making a double batch.  You can put the extra set aside as a beautiful gift the next time you’re invited for dinner.  Such a lovely alternative to flowers.

Most fabric stores have a huge range of lovely fabric that would suit this project.  My choice is a linen blend because I love the beautiful fringe on the edge of each ring.  This is created by tearing the fabric rather than cutting it.  Of course, if a perfectly straight edge is your preference, by all means grab your scissors and cut away.

My fabric is from Spotlight.  I had trouble settling on a fabric because there were so many lovely patterns and colours to choose from.  Here’s my final choice.  It’s a cotton/linen blend and lovely to work with.  Luckily it was on sale, as fabric often is at Spotlight, so ½ metre set me back $9.  You could probably even get away with 1/3 of a metre, but I prefer to err on the side of caution and go a bit more.  Because I tear the fabric, sometimes the first tear can get too narrow at the end because the cut prior may have been uneven.  Anyway, if you end up with extra fabric I have some fun ideas for fabric scraps coming up, so stay tuned.

The other main expense is glue.  I always use Bondcrete for my gluing projects.  It’s strong, dependable PVA glue and consequently works well with so many projects.  So rest assured, it’ll be useful for so many other jobs around the house.

Your paper tube should have a diameter of at least 4 cm.  This gives you enough room to easily feed your napkin through the centre.  You may need three rolls, so next time you finish a paper towel roll, don’t throw out the tube.

Special Tips

To make things even easier I’ve outlined the process in both photos and video.  There are a few things to keep in mind.  When you’re spreading the glue onto the fabric, try and keep to the centre.  This will leave your fringed edges lovely and soft.

As you wrap the fabric around the paper roll make sure to smooth out any little wrinkles.  At the end of the fabric roll you may need to paint on a little extra glue so that the end sits completely flush and is almost invisible.

One last tip is to check your fabric strips.  If one end is prettier than the other, make sure that’s the end that sits on the outside of the fabric napkin ring.

I ended up making a few sets of napkin rings, so here’s a set I packaged up for a friend.  Better than a box of chocolates.  As a sweet touch I jazzed up the gift box with the same fabric.
