Hand Sew This Easy Rope Basket

Rope baskets with jewellery

This rope basket is so cute and so easy to make.  If you’re keen to curl up on the couch and binge your favourite Netflix show while you create, then look no further.

On the other hand, if you’re feeling social this project is perfect too.  Have a group of friends over for a sewing session.  It’s so easy – probably about 20% concentration and 80% talk and tea.

The guide below will give you an overview of what you need and how you do it.  You’ll end up with a basket about 10 cm  in diameter and 3 cm high.  Once you get the gist, you’ll want to play around creating different shapes and sizes.  Experimenting with different yarn colours is fun too.

No need to be precise, just keep stitching and you’ll end up with the sweetest rope basket ever.  Their lack of perfection gives them extra charm. If you get carried away and make more than you need (as I’m sure you will) they make cute gifts.  Load them up with small goodies and wrap with a bit of cellophane.

What You Need to Make a Rope basket:

Approximately 2.5 metres of Macrame Cord / Rope (I use 6 mm thickness)

Yarn

Yarn needle

Scissors

Rope Basket Materials

Rope Basket Step by Step:

Step One

To begin with, thread your needle with yarn.  Tightly wrap the end of your rope a few times with the yarn to give you a secure start, then sew through the middle of the wrap.

Step Two

The next step is to begin your coil.  Fold the end of your rope tightly back onto itself and stitch though the fold.

Step Three

Once you have secured the beginning of your coil, continue to wind your rope tightly, sewing two rope strands together as you go around. Sewing through the actual rope strand rather than in between rope strands will make your basket stronger.  You should do this for most of your stitches.  Some stitches can go in between the rope strands.

Step Four

Once your base measures about 8.5 cm in diameter you can start working on your basket wall.  To achieve a slight gradient as I have done with the orange basket, place the upper rope slightly on the outside of the base.  If you want a straight wall, start building exactly above the rope on the outer base.

Step Five

Once you come to the end of you basket, cut the end of your rope to a taper and tightly sew yarn over the top.  The taper cut will ensure your ending is well camouflaged.

Finishing rope basket

Step Six

To tie off your end, secure the final stitch under the final loop.  You may need to do step six and seven a few times if your yarn length runs out midway through the project.

Step Seven

To finish your rope basket, hide the yarn tail within the rope and trim extra yarn.

To make a lid for your basket just follow step one to three until your coil is large enough to perch on top of your basket.
