Are you feeling creative and have a spare hour? All it takes is some wire, rope, fabric, sticky tape and clear nylon thread to make this sweet mobile. What a beautiful creative touch for a baby’s nursery or child’s room.
Material
Fabric, ripped into thin strips, about 1 cm wide
Rope, 2.1 metres, I used 6 mm thickness
Wire, 2.1 metres, I used 1.57 mm diameter wire
Sticky tape
Clear nylon thread
Tools
Glue gun
Pliers
Scissors
Step One
To make the smallest heart, cut a 35 cm length of wire and bend it into a heart shape. Next, join the wire at the bottom of the heart with a twist. Then using pliers, bend the wire so that the join lies flat against the heart. In this project I used 1.57 mm wire which is easy to work with, but you could also use a coat hanger. This will be a bit harder to cut and bend, however, with pliers it will be manageable.
Step Two
To give your heart some thickness, cut a piece of rope to measure 35 cm, then using sticky tape secure the rope to your wire all the way around.
Step Three
Next, take a fabric strip and with a small dab of glue, secure it to your rope at any point. Once your glue is dry, begin to tightly wind your fabric around the rope and wire to create the final layer of your heart. To ensure your fabric remains in place, feel free to occasionally glue as you wind, however, if you wind tightly enough this isn’t really necessary. Once you get to the end of your fabric strip, secure it in place with glue. If your fabric strips are short it may take a few strips to cover your entire heart.
Step Four
For your next two hearts repeat Steps One to Three above, however, this time your measurements for the wire and rope should be :
Medium Heart – 65 cm.
Largest Heart – 110 cm.
Step Five
Finally, using one length of nylon thread or fishing wire, join the three hearts with secure knots. Begin with the smallest heart, then the medium, then the large heart. Ensure your thread is long enough so that you can adjust the mobile to hang at the right length.
